DECEMBER MEETING
HOLIDAY POTLUCK/EXCHANGE
The Holiday Potluck/Exchange is Dec. 13 at Buzzard's Backyard BBQ. Robert will prepare chicken and beef for our main course.
PLEASE RSVP Merrie Hewitt (646-0246 or groveweavr@aol.com) ASAP so she can let Robert know how much food to prepare. Bring
a side dish or dessert to round out our potluck.
The gift exchange for this year is a gift box - any size, shape, design. You are welcome to join us even if you don't
participate in the gift exchange. It's you we would like to see.
Finally, through Nancy Trissel, we learned about an organization in southern California that teaches knitting to at-risk
teenagers. Please bring yarn, needles and patterns to the meeting and Merrie will ship them to the organization. Thanks and
see you the 13th.
Time: Thurs.Dec. 13, 2007 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Place: Buzzard's Backyard BBQ, Fremont St., Monterey
(near Travelodge Motel)
WHERE DID 2007 GO?
The guild began the year with an update on the Nanyuki Weavers and Spinners from Marguerite Campbell. This led to a "Sponsor
a Sheep" fund raising effort at the Asilomar Conference in March which netted about $900.
Another successful project was one taken on by the "night meeters" at the Sally Griffin Active Living Center
in P.G. A loom donated to them was repaired and then warped up for use.
We were very fortunate to have Martha Stanley as our guest in May when she talked about Anasazi sandals and brought examples
of work she has done related to Anasazi weaving.
We also took advantage of the talents of our members with the flat weave project at the Monterey library led by Merrie
and Jan; Judy Burdick's double presentation of her Oxford/Berkeley Summer School experience of "England in the Age of
Chaucer"; Susan Bradshaw's very useful talks on Profile Drafts; a sample from Cleda Houmes; a heads up on Christmas items
with Nancy Nix's origami program; and Ann Pettit's dragon boat program.
In between, we managed to squeeze in an indigo dye day at Jan's, the Monterey County Fair, and our felted soap bar project
for the Homecrafters' Market.
Thanks to our fearless leader, Merrie, for guiding us through the year and to all of you who contributed your time, enthusiasm,
talent and support. Here's to another good year!
NOVEMBER HAPPENINGS
While Ann Pettit entertained us at our Nov. meeting with the history of the dragon boat festival, we cut our templates,
shaped our ornaments and wound our colorful threads to form our "dragon boats". Thank you, Ann, for a fun, creative
program. Susan Friedrichs made a template, which I'll bring to the Dec. meeting for those who want to make some stocking
stuffers.
The Homecrafters Marketplace came and went and it was a banner day for Mary Lou Hanley, who came down from San Francisco
to sell (and take orders for) her scarves. Glad you're enjoying big city life. It was great to see Susan Bradshaw's lovely
glass work and learn that she's very busy filling orders. Thanks to all who helped set up, sell, and take down. A special
thanks to Ann Pettit for making sure the guild participated once again.
SALLY GRIFFIN LOOM PROJECT
The loom is warped thanks to Cleda Houmes who stole over to the Sally Griffin Center from Salinas. And thanks to all of
you who helped along the way to complete the project. Feel free to stop by the Center to weave an inch or two!

When the gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers. -Oscar Wilde
This quote graces an email I received from our new Newsletter Editor, SUSAN FRIEDRICHS. I'm waiting for my punishment

Thank you, Susan, and welcome to the guild.

WHO REMEMBERS CRYSTAL:
and whatever happened to her?
For those of you who took weaving classes at MPC between 2001 and 2003, the name Crystal, the yarn Sari silk, and the
place Big Sur are clues that may trigger your memory. Crystal Gregory was a young woman in our weaving class who was our first
source of Sari silk yarn. The Fall 2007 issue of Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot traces Crystal's move from Big Sur to Humboldt
County where she became involved with The Ink People Center for the Arts in Eureka until she moved to Eugene, OR where she
is now getting her B.F.A. in fiber arts at the University of Oregon. Crystal is the recipient of the Dendel Scholarship for
2007.
Thanks to Merrie for noticing this article. I'll bring a copy to the meeting so you can see Crystal's work.
Happy Holidays!!
