As a creative challenge participating guild members exchange items to provide the starting point for the exchange project.
The 2012 Guild Challenge is to exchange photographs with a color palette for the starting point.
The receiver uses the colors in the photo as the starting point for their creative efforts. The project may be done in any
media of the makers choice.
2011 - photo exchange of a favorite piece of jewelry to inspire an accessory
March Sample by Merrie
H. My Christmas exchange
was Ann's wedding ring. I agonized for months over how to interpret the inscriptions on her ring. I showed the photo
to Judy A. (Gilmore Looms), and she unlocked the "creative block" by showing me how there were so many
hues of grays that don't really "pop" until you look closely. I then found your sample from
the sample service at Convergence San Jose 1990 (I believe) of the double faced twill. Somehow, the twills
going in different directions seemed to be loosely reminiscent of the (what I believe to be) Arabic inscriptions,
and combining them with different hues from black to white seemed to work. The final "praise from
Cesar" was when I showed the final scarf to Tom, and he said this was the ONLY thing I had ever woven that he would like
to have one of. You gotta know I immediately went and ordered the yarn for him!
February Sample by
Susan B.
Susan
did a fused glass plate for Sue's silver bracelet of Pacific Northwest Indian design. As an "accessory"
inspired by the bracelet, the plate could function as the location Sue stores her bracelet when not being worn. Susan
chose to use fused glass over weaving since all of her current creative efforts are focused on glass.
January Sample by Laurie S. This plain weave scarf was inspired by the earrings in
the photo. The yarns were dyed in the indigo pot that we had at the dye day in July. I love my scarf Laurie and have worn
it almost daily at work to keep the winter chill away. Thanks! Simone
