APRIL MEETINGS RECAP
Many thanks to Susan Bradshaw for her presentation on
Profile Drafts which she gave at both our meetings in
April. It is an amazingly helpful tool. Susan provided
clear handouts but, to be perfectly honest, you need
Susan to explain them. Perhaps she'll do housecalls.
Thanks again, especially for driving in from Royal Oaks
not once but twice!
CNCH 2007 AT ASILOMAR
The guild booth featuring the Nanyuki Spinners and
Weavers at the CNCH 2007 Fiber Retreat at Asilomar,
was a smashing success. Kudos to Merrie and Tom Hewitt
who designed very appealing "certificates of sheep
ownership"; and to Claudia and Merrie for setting up the
booth. Merrie reported that over $900 was donated to
purchase sheep for the Nanyuki group. Certificates of
sheep ownership are still available for those of us who
were not at Asilomar - donation $45. In addition, knit
kits, designed by Kate McGrave, will soon be available.
The kits contain yarn and instructions to knit animals.
Monies from these projects will be sent to the Nanyuki
through Hands of Hope.
SIGHTSEEING/KNITTING/MUSEUM TRIP
Thanks to Laurie Simmons for alerting us to the San Jose
Express (line 55) that Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST)
now offers riders. Guild members are considering an
outing/field trip with the San Jose Museum of Quilts and
Textiles as our goal.
The buses leave Monterey's Tyler St. parking garage at
5:15 am, 9:50 am and 3:18 pm , stopping at the Transit
Center, Sand City, Prunedale, Gilroy, and Morgan Hill
with their final destination within five minutes walking
distance of the HP Pavilion in San Jose. Returning buses
leave at 7:55 am, 1:35 pm and 5:53 pm. The full trip
takes about two hours and costs $8 (exact change).
Just think - sightseeing, four hours of knitting time, and
a visit to a fabulous museum. And think of the gas we can
save! Check exhibits at SJ Quilt Museum listed on p. 2.
Let Kate McGrave (655-3597) or me (375-8049) know
if you're interested. We'll make it happen.
For complete schedules, maps, and fares, call 1-888MST-BUST or visit MST.ORG.

A LINK TO LATVIA
Courtesy of Nancy Trissel
An amazing collection of handknit Latvian mittens were
knit for a 2006 NATO summit in Riga, Latvia. Cited
from the press release:
"To give a warmly welcome to the guests of the meeting
of NATO Heads of State and Government in Riga, the
organizers are planning to present a pair of unique,
handmade Latvian ethnographic mittens to the members
of NATO delegations and media representatives.
Around 300 knitters, even men, from all regions of
Latvia are busy knitting 4500 pairs of mittens. Each of
them will be made with unique traditional Latvian
ornaments, originating from four Latvia's geographical
regions - Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme and Zemgale, some
of them even being as old as ten centuries.
The knitters admit that the idea of NATO summit
organizers has promoted revival of knitting traditions or
as they call it "Renaissance of ethnographic ornaments."
Being symbolic to Latvia's history, they will show the
guests the richness of Latvia's culture and diversity of its ethnographic ornaments. Organizers also hope that the
memories of our guests from Riga will be encrypted in
the mittens."

2006 for more pictures. The website is great and has lots
of other interesting stuff (see sheep cartoon). Thanks
Nancy.
