NOVEMBER MEETING
Dragon Boats
From Ann Pettit
At the November meeting, we will make dragon boats. Dragon boats are small, angular shapes, wrapped with thread. They make
great Christmas tree ornaments or mobile dangles. The wrapping thread makes the design and the path of the wrapping thread
is unexpected and fun. It takes about half an hour or less to make one, depending on how complicated you get with color changes.
Please bring:
5 glass-headed pins for each dragon boat you want to make
scotch tape, pencil, and ruler
scissors to cut cereal box cardboard
thread/yarn - Christmas-y colors ( bright is good; can be as fine as 20/2 cotton; embroidery floss is excellent; should be
smooth - no slubs or fluffy stuff)
blunt needle (not a giant one)
Time: Thurs. Nov. 8, 2007 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Place: Buzzard's Backyard BBQ, Fremont St., Monterey (near Travelodge Motel)
NIGHT MEETINGS
There will be no more night meetings until 2008. However, there is still work to be done to complete the warping of the loom
at the Sally Griffin Center, P.G. Kate and Jan finished putting the new heddles on. If you have time, drop by the Center
and work on the warp. Andrea can direct you to the loom and material.
A WEEKEND TO SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISANS
l. Homecrafters Marketplace, Sat., Nov. 17 in Carmel. We have fabric woven during the Monterey County Fair that needs to be
turned into saleable items (pillows, runners, purses, etc.). If you're interested in helping out with this or with setting
up, selling, and/or taking down on the day of the Marketplace, please contact Ann (twopettits@yahoo.com or 375-9694).
If you're interested in buying gifts, this is a great venue.
2. Monterey Bay Aquarium Craft Fair (From Simone Morton) The Aquarium staff and volunteer craft fair will be held on Sun.,
Nov. 18 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Free admission to the aquarium if you come to the craft fair. You just need to mention someone
who works at the aquarium as either staff or volunteer, so if you mention me (Simone) or Merrie Hewitt, you can get in.
HOLIDAY POTLUCK/EXCHANGE
The Christmas gift exchange for this year is a gift box. It can be knitted, felted, woven, made of origami paper - whatever
material and shape and size you want. Should be fun to make and fun to share. The Potluck/Exchange will be Dec. 13 at Buzzard's
Backyard BBQ. More information in December newsletter.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Laurie Simmons has volunteered to be on the Nominating Committee. She would like company. If you are interested in being on
the Nominating Committee and/or being an officer, please call Laurie (625-3688).
RECAP OF OCTOBER MEETING
Nancy brought lots of beautiful origami paper and many source books that she's collected over the years. She prepared a great
handout which we giggled our way through - only because some of the instructions were in Japanese - trying to figure out
how to make various items. We'll bring the results to the November meeting. Thanks Nancy for a fun morning.

Kaffe Fassett will be coming to Pacific Grove! Back Porch Farics and Monarch Knitting & Quilts have joined to bring Kaffe
Fassett to Pacific Grove on January 3rd, 2008. Both stores will host an afternoon book signing, and then Kaffe will present
a slide show and lecture at Pacific Grove Middle School Auditorium at 7PM. Tickets for the lecture are $15 and are available

Kaffe will have new books just off the press at that time, both for quilting and knitting. His new fabric line is already

MORE ON DRAGON BOATS
The Dragon Boat Festival, rooted in fertility rites to ensure abundant rainfall in southern China, goes back more than 2,000
years. It is still widely celebrated with river parades, the dragon-boat races and symbolic offerings of zongzi (glutinous
rice dumplings) to the nation's earliest-known poet, Qu Yuan. The ornaments are shaped like the rice dumplings.
