CARMEL CRAFTS GUILD NEWSLETTER
* SEPT. 2007 *
SEPTEMBER DAY MEETING
The Guild Day Meeting will include the following activities:
Show and Tell of items exhibited in the Monterey County Fair 2007. Those of you who were not able to exhibit at the fair,
please bring whatever you've been working on. We love to look and touch!!!
Discuss what to make with fabric woven at 2006 and 2007 fairs to sell at Homecrafters Marketplace. Fabric will be available
to take home.
Discuss the Christmas Potluck/Exchange. Last year we
exchanged purses. Come with ideas for this year. (Perhaps what we make at October's program with Nancy Nix-Hansen?)
Take advantage of the nice weather and the outdoor patio at Buzzard's to work on felted soap bars to sell at the Homecrafters
Marketplace as a fundraiser.
The Guild will provide all the materials needed for the felted soap bars (bars of soap, wool roving, containers, hot water,
panty hose, and towels). Nancy Trissel donated some lovely merino roving in various colors which Ann will bring. Please feel
free to bring materials of your own, especially colored roving and special soap that you wish to felt, e.g., scented soap,
odd-shaped soap, handmade soap.
We can end with lunch at Buzzard's.
Time: Thurs., Sept. 13, 2007 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Place: Buzzard's Backyard BBQ, Fremont St., Monterey
(near Travelodge Motel)
SEPTEMBER NIGHT MEETING
At the Guild Night meeting, we'll continue to warp up the loom. Join us in making heddles, sleying the reed, and/or donating
shuttles, books, and other weaving equipment you no longer need. (Thanks to Kate McGrave who dropped off some books.)
Time: Thurs., Sept., 27, 2007 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Place: Sally Griffin Center, 700 Jewell Ave., P.G.
HOMECRAFTERS MARKETPLACE
From Ann Pettit
Homecrafters Marketplace is Sat., Nov. 17. Jury day for Homecrafters is Wed., Sept 5, 9-3. Carmel Crafts is going at
11 a.m. The jurying takes place at the old lumber yard on the corner of 3rd and Junipero in Carmel. (That's the back, entrance
is on 3rd.) If possible, anyone wanting to sell should come and jury. (It is possible to sell even without jurying, but
the items would need to be in the general style of what we juried in.)
The booth fee depends upon how many people are sharing it. The booth total is $200. Currently we have confirmed participants
Mary Lou Hanley, the Guild, Berta Jones, and Anita Seckel. Possible participants are Pat Rosberg and Susan Bradshaw. It would
be great to have two additional participants. There is quite a bit of space in our booth because it is a double.
Please contact Ann if you are interested in selling or for more information (twopettits@yahoo.com or 375-9694)

MONTEREY COUNTY FAIR 2007
Although many of us were traveling, entertaining guests, singing, bicycling, moving, babysitting or involved in other
worthwhile activities, the Guild did participate in this year's fair by exhibiting items and staffing the demonstration loom
in the Wool Room.
Thanks go to Merrie Hewitt and Sue Pinckney for warping up the loom, and to Merrie and Tom Hewitt for delivering the loom
to the Wool Room and returning it to Jan's garage. The following deserve many thanks for weaving at the fair: Merrie Hewitt,
Linda Millerick, Simone Mortan, Ann Pettit, Sue Pinckney, Brittny Sattler, and Laurie Simmons.
Thanks also to those who exhibited their work. We have many winners this year.
Mary Lou Hanley received three ribbons:
1st - Tencel/Silk scarf
2nd - Chenille scarf
2nd - Vest (check our website for a photo of Mary Lou modeling the vest)
Merrie Hewitt received five ribbons:
Tapestry rug--- 1st, Best of Show, Special Prize
1st - Tencel Twill Sampler scarf
3rd - Painted silk scarf
Robin Rudd received 2 blue ribbons in the Wool Show:
One was for the handspun/handcrafted Ruana/Shawl class. She entered a knit Aran style ruana.
The second was for handspun skein, Needlepoint yarn.
Jan Thoele received two ribbons:
2nd - cotton/rayon scarf
2nd - Estee Lauder box
Joan Williams received a blue ribbon for her woven jacket. (Ed Note. Below is information Joan sent me and I think it's
very much worth sharing. )
It was a twill weave using plain cotton and cotton-rayon-slub, both from Blue Heron, in the colorway called Copper
Beech. I wove it on my Schacht Mighty Wolf.
As a newbie weaver, I made the mistake of using the
slub yarn every 8th warp, since otherwise I wouldn't have enough warp for the fabric width I needed. The slubs caught
in the dents every time! Yeecchhh!! I soldiered through, and then had to line the jacket because of some floats on the underside
resulting from this mistake.
My rudimentary sewing skills were also stretched to
the limit on this, which is a pattern from Loes Hines (very simple thankfully.) Since I didn't have enough fabric for
the collar, I took some Solvy (dissolvable film stuff) and laid on a bunch of scrunched up matching ribbon (from Back Porch
fabrics -- came in a tube of several ribbon types), plus extra hunks of the fabric, and the thrums, and little inkle-woven
remainders; then machine-sewed a grid to keep it all in place and then got the Solvy off with boiling water. The judges' comments
included a suggestion to line this collar portion -- a good idea.
I hear that Simone Mortan also received awards.
Congratulations to everyone who exhibited and thanks to all who participated in the fair.

OFFICERS FOR 2008
Time to start thinking about officers for 2008. For sure, the presidency and the newsletter editor positions are up for
grabs. Let Merrie know if you want to be on the Nominating Committee and/or be an officer. It's a wonderful opportunity!
